Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated around the globe on 05 June. Run by the United Nations Environment Programme, this special day is dedicated to raising awareness of both environmental protection and the measures needed to keep our planet safe. Recycling also plays a major role here as it closes material life cycles. In fact, conserving raw materials around the world by recovering and reusing them is a fundamental requirement if our environment is to be sustainably protected and climate change halted.
REMONDIS believes closing material life cycles is not only one of the core purposes of its business but also its social responsibility. Every year, REMONDIS collects and processes over 30 million tonnes of recyclables so that they can be returned to industrial businesses as raw materials, helping to reduce millions of tonnes of carbon emissions. What’s more, we are calling for the introduction of higher collection rates, for the closure of climate-damaging landfills as well as for an extension of the Ecodesign Directive to include raw material efficiency – and not just today but all year round. The REMONDIS Group’s Lippe Plant in Lünen alone saves around 500,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
