Schwerin. Following a Europe-wide tender procedure, the Schwerin city council has decided to go into partnership with REMONDIS: on 01 January this year, REMONDIS AG & Co. KG took over a 49 percent share of the company, Schweriner Abfallentsorgungs- und Straßenreinigungsgesellschaft mbH (SAS). REMONDIS has emerged the winner, therefore, of the Europe-wide tender which had attracted many competitors. The German Cartel Office has already approved the takeover.
SAS has been active within the areas of street cleaning and waste disposal for 50 years. Working on behalf of the Schwerin city council, the 60 employees achieved a turnover of around 8 million euros last year. SAS has been commissioned by the City of Schwerin to provide city-cleaning and waste disposal services for the next 20 years. The main services provided by SAS are, for example, processing household and bulky waste, cleaning streets, open spaces and markets, clearing the streets of snow in winter and collecting recyclables (yellow recycling bin/bag, collecting old paper and glass).
Norbert Claussen, Lord Mayor of the city, is looking forward to working together with REMONDIS, “A public private partnership with a private service provider is the best possible solution for Schwerin as SAS can be set up for the future and yet we are still able to have an influence on the waste disposal and city cleaning company. We were looking for a strategically strong and experienced partner and have found this at REMONDIS.” REMONDIS already runs successful public private partnerships with other city councils, for example with Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Zwickau, Potsdam, Wernigerode, Oberhausen, Gotha, Bremerhaven and Neubrandenburg. Dr Burkhardt Greiff, project manager at REMONDIS, commented, “We would like to thank the representatives of the City of Schwerin for choosing REMONDIS and promise that we will live up to your expectations.”
With its approx. 18,500 employees, REMONDIS AG & Co. KG is one of the world’s largest privately run water and environmental service companies serving more than 20 million people. REMONDIS runs its own plant network of 500 facilities and has branches and affiliate companies in 20 European countries as well as in China, Japan, Taiwan and Australia.
