Selm. Nordkirchen-based K & W GmbH, a specialist for surface technology and heavy-duty corrosion protection, has purchased REMONDIS GmbH & Co. KG's company grounds in the Schachtstraße in Selm which are home to both a sorting facility and a recycling centre. K & W is planning to modify and extend the facilities on the site, an area of just under 36,000m2, to set up a production facility for steel and container construction work and is expecting to create up to 80 new jobs over the long term.
Prior to the sale, REMONDIS had run a sorting plant and compactor for light-weight packaging and paper on its Schachtstraße site as well as a recycling centre. Although this traditional environmental service company had made every effort to ensure that all waste paper from the District of Unna would continue to be sorted in Selm on behalf of the company, Kreisabfallwirtschaftsgesellschaft (GWA/AKU), the project was put out for tender across Europe. Being the lowest-priced supplier, REMONDIS was awarded the waste paper recycling contract by Kreisabfallwirtschaftsgesellschaft for the District of Unna but on condition that the waste paper is only handled at GWA's sites in Bönen and in Lünen at the city's harbour. As a result the Schachtstraße site in Selm, that had been processing waste paper from cities such as Werne and Selm for over 10 years, became obsolete. The employees working at the site have been transferred to other REMONDIS locations in the region. From the beginning of next year, recyclable products will continue to be accepted in Selm and can be taken to the recycling centre at REMONDIS' branch located in the Industriestraße. Access to the site will be via the Knappenweg.
The sale of the REMONDIS site to K & W GmbH was also concluded based on the premise that both companies had, as a result, contributed towards a further positive development of the City of Selm as a business location not least as this move should result in the creation of 80 new jobs.
Following the signing of the contract on Thursday, Selm businessman and managing director of K & W, Lothar Knäpper, underlined the significance of his company's commitment: "As a company based in the region, we are very pleased to have secured the new site in Selm for our production activities for the region. From our site in Selm, we will be active as a systems supplier for industrial businesses and energy suppliers, for example, in the area of chimney flues, in the local region - especially in view of the new power plants that are due to be built soon - as well as across Germany and the whole of Europe." K & W will be able to move to its second site in Selm very soon - its other site is located on the grounds of the old Bartling paper factory on the River Lippe - and the hall, in particular, will be able to be put to use very quickly.
Jürgen Mauthe, managing director of REMONDIS GmbH & Co. KG in Selm, believes that the takeover of the REMONDIS site there means further good prospects for the region: "REMONDIS is particularly pleased about the fact that K & W has purchased the grounds as it is looking to further develop the site through innovative concepts thus playing an important role in creating further jobs in Selm."
